Mixed Metals

Mixing metals is the trend of the year in accent pieces like faucets, lighting, drapery rods, and hardware fixtures to create an industrial yet minimalistic design. The mixing of metals can be accomplished by experimenting with cold and warm colors together or blending different finishes of a metal such as matte and metallic. If you are looking to experiment within a specific color, gold is the popular color for this year.

Layering Patterns

These two 2017 trends can positively benefit each other when used in conjunction: layering and bold patterns. The layering of vivid colors and fun patterns can make a room feel electric and help in creating the focal point of a room.

Let The Light In

For most people, privacy is a major reason for completely covering a window, but natural sunlight can often be blocked. There are a variety of shades that will allow sunlight and brightness in while still maintaining privacy. Top-down/bottom-up shades are versatile in allowing you to customize the treatments while adjusting the position of the shades.

Decorating The Fireplace Mantel

Crisp weather has made its frosty appearance and the excitement of the holiday season is in the air! With the pending arrival of holiday parties, family get-togethers and out of town guests, now is the time to tap into the spirit of decorating your home.

As the fireplace mantel takes center stage with warm roaring fires, family gatherings and stockings hung with care, let your creativity flow.  Layering the right pieces will make this festive area one of the easiest places to add holiday cheer. Following some of the tips below will help you create the perfect space during this magical season.

Greens:

  • Choose full, natural looking greenery – fluff and shape it to give volume while adding areas to hang ornaments and lighting
  • Once fluffed, drape it across the top of the mantel or swag your greenery in even lengths in front of your mantel

Lighting, ribbons, ornaments and more:

  • Weave electric or battery operated lights throughout your greenery.
  • Nestle ribbons, ornaments and trinkets in little pockets and add sparkle and shimmer with glittering pinecones and clusters of berries.

Back Wall:

  • Draw your eye upward and around by adding height and texture
  • Flameless candles flickering in odd numbered groups and frosted hurricane candle holders add softness and warmth
  • Whimsical or elegant holiday figurines, cherished nutcrackers or a heirloom nativity makes this the focal point. Your mantel will not only be memorable, but also meaningful with your personal touch
  • A beautiful wreath with the same sparkling embellishments hung on the wall or above your mirror will finish off this festive area.

Falling For Fall Colors

It is hard to believe that summer is already over and we are into the full swing of fall. I will miss the lazy summer days with bright sun and warm weather but always greet the beautiful colors of autumn and crisp fall air with anticipation. Our boys are back in school, soccer season has begun and cool evenings will bring warm fires, comfort food, and tasty soups. I also look forward to carving pumpkins and the excitement of kids running from house to house collecting goodies in their scary (and sometimes just plain cute) costumes.
As you look around your house and begin thinking about areas to address, don’t forget your walls. As mentioned in our last email, it is important to finalize your furniture and window treatments prior to selecting your paint colors. There are a limited amount of fabrics to choose from while paint can be color-matched to anything. Once fabric is finalized we can assist you in selecting the perfect paint color for your walls.

Paint
A new coat of paint is an inexpensive way to make a room look brand new. You can freshen up a room or create a whole new look. Sherwin Williams recently unveiled their 2017 color of the year. Poised taupe (SW6039) which is a mix of earthen brown and conservative gray which translates perfectly to modern and classic looks. The balance of warm and cool colors bring coziness and harmony to any room. Sherwin Williams (Sherwin-williams.com) is touting poised taupe as their new neutral which is an ideal background for colors ranging from blues to greens to golds and even reds and purples.

Paint Finishes

  • Flat – This is perfect on ceilings and in rooms that will not be exposed to a lot of wear and tear (or sticky fingers) such as living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Flat paint hides blemishes and its non-reflective finish makes walls look smooth. Flat paint is also washable with a damp sponge.
  • Satin – High-traffic areas are perfect for this finish. Halls, children’s bedrooms and family rooms can be cleaned with a damp sponge, just do not rub too hard or the finish will come off. The satin finish has a slight gloss and gives a richer look.
  • Semi-Gloss – This finish is durable and perfect for areas that get cleaned frequently. Kitchens, bathrooms, moldings and doors will benefit from this application.
  • Gloss – Areas that you would like to highlight, doors, trim, cabinets and furniture are perfect for this durable finish.

Paint is also available with many different features such as anti-microbial, odor eliminating, highly scrubbable and mildew resistant to name a few.

“Poised Taupe SW 6039 creates a cozy lifestyle and brings a sense of sanctuary into our homes. It diffuses the stresses of the world outside our doors — so much so that we feel restored and in balance when we walk across our threshold.”
